The Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA) mandate is: “To implement and promote the economic development policies of the Gauteng Provincial Government in the areas of economic production, investment and trade.”
The Gauteng Economic Development Agency’s (GEDA) mission is to promote economic growth and encourage new investment in Gauteng , while maximising opportunities for skills transfer and job creation.
The Gauteng provincial government’s priority is to create an environment that will attract investors, and foster growth and development. In pursuit of this goal it created the Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA).
GEDA has facilitated in excess of R2,5 billion worth of investments into the province since its inception.
Neil Nel, general manager of Project Facilitation and Development at GEDA, notes: “We see investment in a broad way. We see it as wealth created. It is not just a matter of someone investing directly into Gauteng – there are many more ways of creating wealth in the province, like foreign trade, re-investments and expansions. All these contribute to an increase in job creation and an increase in taxes to the government, which benefits us.”
GEDA maximises job opportunities by analysing the value chain of investments and introduces “job-rich” supply side chains to the principal investor.
GEDA uses its resources to encourage local industry to invest, reinvest and build competitive advantage.
GEDA – making a difference that makes the difference. |

SARS is the main source of revenue for a government with a huge development agenda. It plays a crucial role in enabling the government to deliver change to those who need it most." - Pravin Gordhan, Commissioner
SARS in brief
The South African Revenue Service was established by legislation to collect revenue and ensure compliance with tax law. Its vision is to be an innovative revenue and customs agency that enhances economic growth and social development, and supports South Africa's integration into the global economy in a way that benefits all citizens.
In accordance with the South African Revenue Service Act 34 of 1997 [PDF],, the service is an administratively autonomous organ of the state: it is outside the public service, but within the public administration. So although South Africa's tax regime is set by the National Treasury, it is managed by SARS.
SARS aims to provide an enhanced, transparent and client-orientated service to ensure optimum and equitable collection of revenue.
Its main functions are to:
- collect and administer all national taxes, duties and levies;
- collect revenue that may be imposed under any other legislation, as agreed on between SARS and an organ of state or institution entitled to the revenue;
- provide protection against the illegal importation and exportation of goods;
- facilitate trade; and
- advise the Minister of Finance on all revenue matters.
